I had the opportunity to work with Dassault Systèmes as a corporate partner for my senior year engineering capstone at Olin College of Engineering.
This 9-month long capstone project allowed me to work through various levels of ambiguity which elevated my problem solving skills overall as a designer. My project focused on providing a more seamless onboarding and discoverable experience for current and future customers trying to adopt the new 3DEXPERIENCE Works platform.
Unfortunately, my work is under NDA, so I am unable to share it publicly. However, if you would like to learn more about my project, please reach out to me for more details. Or, if you are a recruiter, click down below to view my project.

Explicit communication is paramount:
Because our corporate partners were spread across multiple time zones, I found that communication amongst all stake-holders was important to be able to achieve and produce deliverables that aligned with the business’s needs. Reporting any areas that are still a work in progress, are blocked, or are ready for review allows the team to not only be informed of the status of the project but also develops confidence in you as a designer and a teammate.
-
Not all companies design the same:
With this project being my 2nd design project at a large software company, I notice that different companies value design differently for their respective products. While practices like referencing a design system and using consistent design patterns should be a standard at software companies, I find sometimes you are the one that needs to become the advocate for better design practice. Being a designer is not only about creating beautiful, delightful experiences for people but also educating others about what great design can do for their business’s impact.

It’s okay to ‘break the rules’ sometimes:
During this 9-month long project, I realized that one of the reasons how my senior year capstone project adds value to a company of great size like Dassault Systèmes is because we have a fresh pair of eyes on a product they have spent (literally) years. It made me understand that oftentimes, the best thing we can do to innovate on a product is to bring on a fresh pair of eyes to see what people who are already familiar with the product cannot.
